![]() ![]() I would say skip this excursion unless you are really a science nerd like we are. We had a crowd of 9 so we wanted several pictures so he finally let us get all of them( about 8 pictures for $100). You can get one picture with you in it for $25. The purchasing of pictures was a little crazy. You really wont get the effect on your camera phone. I didn't realize they were taking pictures so did not get a picture while I was in the water but after I got our I did see a guy asking people to look his way to take pictures. We stayed in the water for about 15 minutes or so. Stayed afloat and did not touch the bottom. I am not a great swimmer but asked for a life vest and I was fine. ![]() The boat kicked up water at the motor area and you could see the glow which was cool. The Captain kinda convinced them to stay. ![]() Several people were confused and wanted to leave because they were under the impression they could walk on the bottom since they could not swim well and may touch the bottom. You are not to touch the bottom of the lagoon or it would disrupt the glow effect. We boarded a boat with about 20-30 people (the boat was full) and Captain proceed to tell us if we could not swim then don't get in the water. Admission and activities fees are also included. We took a private shuttle to the location and they had a bar area you could get drinks.Rates shown include your very own private transportation/vehicle/driver/guide.Other Details: Children 3 years old and under free.Montego Bay/Rose Hall Hotels to Historic Falmouth Town.Swimming here is often a highlight of this excursion, as you get to paddle around in water that is glowing in shades of bright blue all around you. See this natural phenomenon for yourself with a 45-minute boat ride. The Luminous Lagoon is said to be the largest and most brilliant of four in the world where you can see this type of phenomenon, a fact that continually attracts and awes visitors and scientists from around the world. Paddle and swim in the waterīeing home to millions of dinoflagellates, at night, the lagoon sparkles and glistens when disturbed as these microscopic organisms produce an eerie glow, reflecting the outlines of fish and other objects in the water. It was the single best place to observe and study microorganisms called dinoflagellates, which thrive in the layers where salt and freshwater combine and glow the brightest in shallow, warm water. Years after the decline of the sugar trade, scientists discovered the lagoon’s geographical location was important for another reason. Once inland, these boats would reload with sugar, rum, and other Jamaican exports and carry them back to the harbor. Located at the eminent point where the Martha Brae River meets the Caribbean Sea, the lagoon housed a wharf where large vessels from England unloaded goods onto smaller ships to be delivered inland up the river. In the 18th century when sugar was king, Falmouth was one of Jamaica’s most pivotal ports. The Mystic Luminous Lagoon stretches along the marshlands of Trelawny from the small community of Rock to the town of Falmouth.
